Clitheroe is at the heart of the beautiful Ribble Valley, which is world renowned for its famous landmark, Pendle Hill. The area boasts a rich history and is filled with legend and mystery. From the story of the Pendle Witches to the founding of the Quaker movement, its landscape is said to have provided the inspiration for J.R. Tolkein's 'Lord of the Rings'.
Clitheroe is traditionally a market town, and maintains an interesting array of independent shops and restaurants. This gives the town a unique character the likes of which are very rare. The Norman castle, which is central to the town, has recently undergone a regeneration scheme, and a creative learning space has been made near the castle keep where frequent events and festivals take place.
To the north west of the town, you enter the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding National Beauty, which is well-known for its impressive landscape and is breeding ground for the rare Hen Harrier - 90% of the UK population are said to reside here. The rivers that run through the valley boast healthy populations of salmon and trout. No matter which direction you take out of the town, you are sure to come across something of interest.
